7-17-11
Finally started working on new Parlor. Most people have said making
your own 24" diameter sprocket wasn't a good idea. It's not
humanly possible. Only god can make a sprocket. So we did a test
section and it wasn't perfect but it wasn't impossible. Matt Sponer
and Peter Luca tirelessly worked to get us to the position shown
in the video. The turntable took two people to lift onto the drill
press. It was 8PM so we quit.
7-18-11 The next day,
I finished the first sprocket and the first 20 drilled holes were
way off as we forgot to tighten some bolts. I couldn't just re-drill
because the bit wandered into the old holes. So I welded up the
20 holes and then re-drilled. These teeth would be weak but there
are about 80 more engaged at any one time. But then the last hole
was 1/8" off.
The second plate was too small to make 150 holes
anyway. So, great. How many man-hours did this lesson cost? It was
about 2:30PM (time to go to the dentist. ((tooth-hurty - 144
tooth hurty)), and we started yesterday at noon. 37. Thirty
seven man-hours so far. Doesn't matter. I redid the hole thing with
144 holes. This is 23" diameter. Practically the same thing.
I only drilled the pilot holes as the Turret Drill Press has quit
working some time ago. It developed Turrets Syndrome. That'l probably
cost $20,000 or so. The 145th hole lined up perfectly with the 1st
hole on both plates. The hole time I was on the verge of giving
up on the hole thing. I still don't have a hole lot of faith, but
now I have my teeth sunk into .... whatever. Tooth hurty.
Our
sprockets are getting married. They are engaged. Worst pun ever?
