The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
In Memory of Cousin Jeff.
Burning
Man
is the anual motorized couch festival in northern
Nevada.
I've been about 12 times. It's a bizzarre
adiction. I can't wait to get back to the desert but the minute
I get there, I am miserable.
I've built about five couches, depending on how you
define the word, "build", and the word, "couch."
Most of them didn't work very well. But then, neither do most cars.
We have a lot of fun building them.
First
Couch was the MoChairs. The wheels only fell off - well, both
years it went. 2000 and 2001
Three Wheeled Sociable
with rear wheel steering and independant front wheel drive.
Tips over easily.
2004
- The Raising Up Couch. Not the most creative name. The drive
was six elecric fan motors. What were we thinking?
2005
- The Blue Couch.
Gas powered. Lot's of flats, but Jeff was a good opperator.
2006
- The Aerothrone
Difficult to steer, but basically didn't break down (more or
less).
2007
- New improved Aerothrone
We were driving on the playa with the couch raised up, and a
fuse blew. The ouch kept running, but all the controls became
unresponsive. We couldn't turn or slow down or lower the scissors.
Lamp post up ahead. Next stop...
2008
We added more
scissors to the latest couch because it wasn't enough of a death
trap. Now we call it
Chair Way to Heaven.
2009
We added canopy,
Retro-Rocket Speakers, Infinity Arm rests, Steampunk colors
and hundreds of LEDs.
2/09
Started a new project: Harriet the Chariot.
Harriet stands for Human Powered Walking Vehicle. Our motto:
"Who knew the dimensions would be so important?"
